Expanding Access in a Small Community

    Description

Built in 1901 and named for the lumber baron who gifted it to the town of Stanley, the existing library is a time-tested structure that exhibits classic regional craftsmanship. It has served a multicultural community for over one hundred years, surviving at least one fire and earning its place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
The proposed addition is seen as an elaboration on this legacy, and as a response to the evolving rituals of the contemporary library. More than tripling in size and introducing a multitude of new media capabilities, the expanded library promises to facilitate rich and diverse community engagements. Along with stacks and digital resources, the addition will house a large Community Room conducive to—among other things—town gatherings, shelter during storms, maker space activities and storytime for local school children.
